The Perfect Man

Another random reviewer musing - There's sure a lot of perfect guys in YA lit. Perfect, as in looks. The heroine at sometime has a chance with The Perfect One, but most of the time it's superficial and we never get any personality. (Or if we do, it matches their looks - perfect.)

So, I'm wondering, what are your thoughts on this? What makes the perfect guy in books to you? Any worth mentioning?

(Lame topic, yes, but I'm away this weekend and this is all I could come up with for Sunday and yeah, I don't need a new post every single day, but that's just how I am. Scheduled posting, BTW.)

My "perfect guy" is always the underdog. The one the heroine steps over in order to get to her dream guy/The Most Popular Guy In School.

I agree with Gabbi. The guy the girl doesn't notice, usually the best friend! It just seems, when they finally get together there is more substance to their relationships since they actually knew each other before!

I agree with the above. I root for the underdog. The guy who doesn't seem perfect.

Same here, but sometimes I like the popular/class president. etc one who is totally nice be the "Perfect" guy.

I like the dark, mysterious type of boys. Of course, Edward was going to be mentioned sooner or later because, atleast in my opinion, he is the perfect guy. But I also like Rob from the 1-800 series he is so incredibly sexy but also mysterious.

Definitely the best friend who secretly loved the protagonist for ages. It's unbearably cliche, but oh well. Musicians are always good as well. (Dexter <3) And for some reason, all the ones I really like have black hair. I even like the crazies if they have black hair. I'm weird.

(Just like everyone above)

Yeah, I agree with the underdog thing. I love best friend vs. hot guy love triangles. I go for the dark-haired, sensitive, music-loving OR artist-extraordinaire OR aspiring-author kind of guy. The kind who is extremely hot but has no idea or thinks nothing of it. And it would help if he had at least one quirky habit, like ... collecting erasers or something cute like that.

Khyrinthia said Dexter, and I second that whole-heartedly! I love Sarah Dessen ( her books and her guy characters ).

Wow. I'm pretty picky, now that I'm reading over this.

I love that we are all agreeing! Who reads the books without these hot underdog best friend artist guys then? LOL!

I like the guys in Sarah Dessen books as well :) (well except Rogerson obviously!) Wes is my absolute favorite. It's great how her books aren't totally about a girl finding a relationship though.

I've never been into the "perfect guy." YAWN. I really liked Elizabeth Scott's debut, BLOOM, because it dealt with the fact that the "perfect guy" is sometimes not at all who you should be with.

I also got into WAKE by Lisa McMann at the scene where you realized that the heroine was into this very very non perfect guy.

In real life, guys who are too good looking usually know it and take way too much advantage of it, and I can never look past that in fiction. In my own books, the too-good-looking "perfect" guy is NOT good relationship material.

I like it when the thing that attracts the girl to the guy has nothing to do with his looks. And vice versa. Who wants to be liked for their looks?
