12 Chapters of Midnight Sun Available on Stephenie Meyer's Website

So, a few days ago, the first twelve chapters of a draft of Midnight Sun were leaked on the internet. Stephenie Meyer posted a response on her site and made the first twelve chapters of the manuscript (still in its unedited, unpolished form) available. Click here to see it, and I suggest you read her message before scrambling for the twelve chapters. (And no, the meadow is not in any one of them.)

She seems quite distressed about it, and rightfully so -- I knew about this leaked manuscript and I know many other fans did, too. It's pure temptation when you find out you can get an early peek at a book you're anticipating so much, and I think most people would, facing the choices of "remaining loyal to the author" and downloading the illegal version anyway, go ahead and pick the latter.

Even though I was quite disappointed in Breaking Dawn and couldn't see myself buying Midnight Sun unless it received glowing reviews and even then, only paperback format, I'm really sorry for the scrutiny she's going through. This chain of events may have fed the fans' hunger temporarily, but it only added insult to injury after the response to Breaking Dawn. Now that she's placed Midnight Sun on hold indefinitely, the fans' anticipation will only grow in the long run.

While I do think that this was an unintentional hell of a marketing technique (this may cause people who hated Breaking Dawn to see Stephenie in a positive light again, and perhaps get over the animosity*), it makes me sad to see Stephenie's discouragement like so.

Ah, such is life. >.< * I have yet to read it and find out if it compensates because, as most of you know, I loathed Breaking Dawn. I'll probably post something about it ;)

;) I agree with you. The leak must have been pretty hard on her ><

I'm pretty sad how it's on hold now >< I really wanted that meadow scene.

I think that it's wrong to do that, and I think it's also wrong not just for the person who leaked it, but for the people who read the leaked manuscript knowing that it was illegal.

Although, if I were given the opportunity to read it, chances are I would have considered it (although I'm 100% positive my hatred of reading things online/on the computer would have won out over my desire to read Midnight Sun). I just feel really bad for Stephenie, because if it were me I would feel beyond terrible that something like that could happen.

Lol, I just emailed you about this. I didn't realize you'd already posted about it. ;)

She should buck up. She's had a great ride so far. Harry Potter got leaked and all was good. Who leaked it... it's not a published book yet so it's gotta be some kind of inside job.

I feel bad about the backlash but she has to remember how many people still like it and loved her other books. Can't please everyone.

Why was Midnight Sun put on hold? Because of the uproar over Breaking Dawn or the leak? I hope not, that would be sort of a chicken move! I remember her saying it was going to be top priority.

I just read her message and i'm kind of mad. What's the point of "punishing" everyone for one person's mistake.

I found about this leak this morning when I was visiting the forums in BD and I couldn't believe it happened! I am more curious as to who caused the leak then actually reading the 12 chapters (is that weird). I mean why would they do that, what were their intentions. I guess we'll never know...I hope not.

ambeen said...

I agree with you Alea. She's overreacting. Hopefully once she calms down she can see the bigger picture and finish it.

Although like you said, it has to be an inside job. Maybe she's tired of the series (or discouraged over the negative feedback on BD--to which I have to say, who is she writing the series for? If she has ceased to write it because she loves it then maybe she shouldn't finish MS) and needed an excuse to abandon the book? I wouldn't be surprised if she orchestrated the whole thing. I just can't imagine someone being so upset they feel they can't go on. It's understandable to be upset but to admit defeat and give up? Hardly.

Steph said...

I really don't know. While I agree to an extent Stephenie may be overreacting, I can't help but wonder what the strain's been like. This woman has received a 99.9% positive reception with her last four books. Then BD comes along and BAM! Criticism at every corner. Sure, a lot of people still loved it, but quite an elevated number DIDN'T, and she's never had to deal with that before.

So, I won't dismiss the possibility of Stephenie having orchestrated this herself. Deep down, I don't think she did. But honestly, if she did, well, I can't really blame her. I'd be sick and exhausted of it by now, too. Some people will condemn her, say she's slacking for all the millions of dollars and fans she has and earns by writing these books, but it comes a time when none of that matters and you just want to lead a normal life again.

Still, though, nothing excuses how terrible BD was. Yuck. Perhaps a break from writing will get Stephenie back in her groove - even if I wasn't a tremendous fan of any of her previous novel save for her debut, anyhow.

Think about the example she's setting for all her young fans. The moment (or second moment) that something goes slightly wrong in her rather unbelievably fabulous career she has a snit fit and says "Oh well I'm not going to do this anymore!" Seriously! She needs to see how lucky she really has been, be upset in private and continue on.

Even if she's sick of it I hate that she's going back on her word. You don't announce to your millions of young fans that you are going to do something and then change your mind! She's a grownup with responsibilities to her fans and she's sort of acting like a big baby! She could lose more fans over this behavior than Breaking Dawn... I feel like she's asking us to beg her to finish writing it, boost her ego back up and then she'll say "Oh ok, I'll do it for my fans, but I'm still mad!"

Alea said...

I keep thinking of what JK Rowling would do. I think she would speak out against the idiot but wouldn't let itstop her from finishing the book. Why let someone else control your series! It's yours!

I think that if Stephanie truly loved the series like she says she does she would complete this book and not let someone else control it. But if, on the other hand she loves the success it's given her more and she's doesn't like this negative spotlight instead of the more familiar positive one then I could understand why she would want to hide in the corner and take the book with her... that just makes me sick to think about.

I don't know what I feel so strongly about this. I don't even want to read the 12 chapters, I'm too mad at her right now!

Alea said...

That last paragraph should should be I don't know WHY i feel so strongly about this. That's what I get for being awake at 5am on the weekend!

ambeen said...

I agree with you Alea. I also keep thinking about other authors and how they would/have reacted when things don't go as planned. Sheesh, Meyer would die if she were ever banned. She takes things waay too personally it seems.

Just so everyone knows, I'm not saying she can't be upset, just that she's taken it too far.

Anonymous said...

I understand she is upset that the story leaked but she knows who did it so why not just take legal action on that person.
I also understand why she put it on hold. Being a writer myself i know how your life affects the way you write. When i had a hard time wiht my family all my stories were dark and the good people died so i think it is best she puts it on hold until legal action is taken or until she feels better about it.

I personally LOVED Breaking Dawn. In my opinion, it was AMAZING. My fave faves of the Twilight Saga are Twilight and Breaking Dawn. Although I wish she would continue writing more books for the Twilight Saga picking up where Breaking Dawn left off.

It deeply upsets me to hear that she may not finish Midnight Sun. I have not, and will not "take a peek" at the leaked chapters. No matter how much I really wanna read them.

I can't see how anyone could not like Breaking Dawn. It is beyond me how my friend doesn't even like Twilight, but you are you and I am me. And I LOVE it.

As an author, it would peeve me beyond belief to have a work-in-progress leaked to the public. When you show your work to your friends, reviewers, etc., it is with the understanding that you will have confidentiality.

That said, if my work WAS leaked, I'm not sure how I'd react. Perhaps I'd beg my public to understand it was a work in progress, far from its finished form, and to realize they were seeing something special and rare: a glimpse of the unfinished product. There may be some value in that, after all, in that readers MAY be inclined to buy the finished project to see how much/what has changed.

The bigger question, I think, is how something that received such negative reviews like Breaking Dawn got out there... did she not have enough reader reaction first? I think the pressure to publish on schedule gets greater and greater as time goes on and authors get more famous, and many don't know how to say, "NO!"

A book takes the time it takes, and putting one out before it's ready results in a decrease in the quality of what's written, and ultimately, I think a loss in readership. I can think of a few authors I no longer read because as time went on, they started to disappoint me.

Now that I'm writing, I have a pretty good clue as to why that might have been.

thegoosegirl.com said...

Anonymous: Ha. I thought Breaking Dawn was poorly written. My opinion. Sure, I have issues with the plot, but more editing would have made a different. Again, my opinion. *starts snickering at the idea of killing herself because she didn't like a book that's pretty much been negatively received by the critics*

Gay: First, I agree. As an aspiring author, I *love* seeing rough drafts and seeing how things change.

And how Breaking Dawn got released? Well, first, Stephenie fought for the book. She originally got a three-book deal, and since Breaking Dawn was guaranteed to sell well, why should Little, Brown hesitate? Also, I'm pretty sure there was no previous reader reaction. After previous leaks, Stephenie Meyer and her publisher decided to keep Breaking Dawn as much of a secret as they could. So there were no ARCs sent out and I don't think Stephenie sought much opinion on the book from her readers before proceeding with releasing it.

Kate-

i know step must have been upset about midnight sun, but it has been months now, and surly she has to had got over it by now.

also i think breaking dawn was great, and she should remember when she was starting out there was on a small amount of fans, and even less of a number of people who didn't like it, so because the latest book was more know of, of course there would be a bigger group of people who wouldn't like it. theres all ways people who don;t like it, you can't please every one.

stephenie i really hope you finnish midnight sun, u shouldn't let something like this get you down, you shoul over come it, and learn from it.

it may be hard for her that her midnight sun has been leaked but not publishing of her midnight sun might put her on great downfall. if she will just simply stop wrting because of what had happened, it only proves that she has a low confidence and streght to face challenges that may come along her way.

I'd like to say thta I am pissed off!! she is one of my favorite authors, and for her to do that really puts her on the bottom on the list. i hope that she sees that making the movie twighlight was a bit of a mistake because no one really read her books until the movie came out. i know it is great publicity, but still. if you go to my school almost every single girl has one of her books. i think almost everyone wanted to see edwards side of view. whoever leaked.....thanks alot. i hope she sees how her readers feel and changes her mind.

Listen,
I'm just another voice in the million you'll receive. I am an author as well and hope to publish my books soon. If you really enjoy writing the Twilight Saga, then you should continue to. So what is someone posted Midnight Sun on the internet? You have got a lot of people worried because you won't finish it! Your probably sitting at home reading the comments left here by countless people and thinking, Wow! they really do care. Personally I think that your not finishing just so people will get angry and leave comments so you get more fans. Stephenie, you are a great author and if you don't finish this book, you'll be making a big mistake. The next time you decide to right a really good book, someone might remember this and not read it. They might think, Oh! This is the person who never finished Midnight Sun because it leaked out on the web. Why should I read any more of her stuff? Then they'll walk away and pick up another book. You have talent, and you need to use it! You can't sit back while fans are pleading for you to continue. You just want attention and you know it. Everyone who thinks about posting a comment should stop because she isn't worth it. She doesn't care about us! She just wants publicity. Just so you know Stephenie, I am done with the Twilight Series. You write a great book and stop writing the series short because it leaked out. We all knew it was going to happen sometime! No great author can write books without expecting one to leak out onto the internet! The person who posted it on the web is clearly jealous of your talent. Now look at what he/she caused. If one of my books got published, I would be glad. No, I'm not crazy. It means the person is jealous and wants to tell you by hurting you.

I was quite moved by your book Breaking Dawn, loved the fact that Edward got to be happy after being alone for so long, and the fact that he as a vampire was not made to be a terrifying monster, in the fact that he sparkles in the sun and does not have teeth that exstend from his mouth and that you made him beautifull.I hope you will some day you will find away to finish Midnight Sun. Would love to hear how Edward felt about bella through his own mind.

MOST importantly just because they leaked that doesn't mean you have to stop writing it.

I think it was wrong to leak this book, but it should still come out. The twilight saga books are great and I have been dying to get my hands on this book, but not this way. not unfinished. I think whoever did that should go to jail and pay a large fine. I iove u stephany and I think u are a literary artist. You have inspired me to become a writer. I hope u decide to finish this book. Dear Mrs.Meyer,
Please,If your fans mean anything to you go through with Midnight Sun.You may not have anything left in your heart for the Twilight Saga but you`ve already started on Midnight Sun all you have to do is just finish it and then give up but just think of all just one book has gotten you and people now know about Midnight Sunand if you finish it and publish it, it will be flying off the shelves. So if you care about your fans then you`ll at least finish it.
